Fun and Ink

An Introduction to Creative Writing and Storytelling for Budding Young Writers

You're a parent who knows how important creativity is for your child. But are you stuck for ideas for how to engage them in creative writing?

It can be really challenging to help your child tap into their imagination.

They want to write, but they don't know how to start, or get lost in the middle, lose interest and drift away.

Maybe they lack the self-confidence to put their writing out there for others to read and you don't know how to support them.

You want to see your child learning, thriving and having fun!

Whether you home educate/homeschool, or not, you want to be able to offer them every possible opportunity to practice.

You want to see them learning new skills, growing in confidence and loving writing. Maybe they'll write a best seller one day, like Christopher Paolini, home educated teen author of Eragon.

Fun and Ink is an online course to help your child learn how to write amazing stories.

Students will work through 6 modules covering essential aspects of storytelling. You can work through these modules with your child, or let them work independently.

Each module consists of videos and exercises to try at home.

We will cover:

  • the basic building blocks for constructing a story;
  • bringing that to life with an immersive world and believable characters;
  • driving the plot through action, dialogue and description;
  • creating conflict; and resolving it.
  • We will also look at editing and revising your own writing.

My aim is for this course to be fun and educational. It's a perfect complement to a home education curriculum, or for anyone interested in developing their writing skills. The basic principles of everything students will learn in this course can be applied to all forms of creative writing; including short stories, novels, and writing for screen or stage. Stories come in many varied forms, across many mediums and my aim is to equip young people with the principles they need to express themselves creatively through engaging storytelling.

Fun and Ink is suitable for children aged 9-13. Students should be able to work through the course independently, although parents are encouraged to use their judgement. Modules are comprised of video tutorials and practical activities. By the end of the course, students will have the tools necessary to help them write their own stories.

Fun and Ink is open for enrolment! I am taking new students so enrol now at this special, early-bird price and be among the first to work through the course.

A Quick Introduction!

This is a brief description of what's in the course. The video content in the modules is in this sort of format.

30 day no-quibble guarantee

This is a zero risk investment in your child's education. If you take a look at the course and decide it's not right for your child, then I am happy to refund you in full, provided you get in touch within 30 days of enrolment. The course is for your family, and I want you to be happy.

What you need to know before buying:

Internet safety is of paramount importance, so rest assured, your child's details will be kept securely and there need not be any direct contact between young students and anyone else. Children are invited to submit their writing for feedback, but this is absolutely optional.

Writing high quality, engaging stories is half art, half engineering! While it is fantastic to be able to write purely from the heart, a story that lacks time-proven techniques is unlikely to resonate with other readers.

If your child is excited to write stories that other people will love, maybe even make a career of it, they will find this course incredibly helpful.

Everyone has a fundamental knowledge of storytelling. Our culture is packed with stories. But few people ever learn how to unpick that knowledge and consciously identify the details. It certainly isn't taught in most schools!

Fun and Ink is perfect for you if...

  • Your child loves creative writing and is keen to expand their knowledge and skill base in order to write even better stories
  • Your child has a strong curiosity in the technical aspects of creative writing and wants to understand the technique
  • You home educate and are looking for a structured curriculum to follow
  • OR your child is at school and you are looking for a complementary program to enhance their education
  • You want to learn alongside your child and have fun doing it!

Testimonials

"I really like the way Holly explains about the different story types, setting the scene, character development, and how to put it all together in a simple way so we can understand what she means. I think so far that my favourite part was writing a short story about a mood and how to keep a story interesting so the reader doesn't get bored. I think Holly's workshops are really entertaining!"

I've always been a writer, but it wasn't until after having children that I finally accepted it as my calling and went after my dream.

Since 2013 I've published 4 novels and a collection of short stories.

In 2016, after I realised that I had valuable knowledge to pass on, I started running creative writing and storytelling workshops for local home educated children.

I got the bug and decided I could find a way to share that knowledge with even more budding young writers! And so Fun and Ink was born.

My dream is to keep writing and publishing books and to reach out to young people with an interest in writing and storytelling and to help them nurture their talent.

When your child completes Fun and Ink they will have all the tools they need to write fantastic stories!

  • Understanding of the importance of structure in satisfying readers
  • In-depth knowledge of the key elements found in every well-told story ever written
  • How to write in different genres and how to meet the expectations of people who love each genre
  • The ability to create rich worlds and relatable characters
  • Strong descriptions that effectively create mood
  • Techniques for driving the plot forwards with believable conflicts and resolutions
  • Confidence to edit their own writing and make it even better
